the origins of chess

Chess or a game very much like chess originated in Egypt. A wall painting on the tomb of Egyptian Queen Nefertari, wife of Ramses II (1304-1237 BCE), shows her playing Senat. It symbolizes the struggle between good and evil. The African games known as Mancala or Wari are among the oldest games, dating back at least to 5000 BCE.

The Excellent Chess mission supports social growth & academic enrichment, through the learning of chess strategies & strengthening critical thinking skills.

Excellent Chess uses chess as a teaching tool to problem solve, think ahead, weigh decisions and build patience (real life skills).

The Excellent Chess Center for the Arts & Education After School Enrichment Program helps develop the whole child. Along with the significant benefits of chess (Better grades, stronger problem solving abilities, longer attention spans, improved math, reading and reasoning) kids also receive the benefits and enjoyment of fun, creative and educational classes.

You can help Excellent Chess by sponsoring a child who is interested in continuing their development through chess and the life skills it teaches. Seeking Volunteers & New Coaches

Here’s your chance to be apart of the Excellent Chess team with coach Andrew, a United States Chess Federation (U.S.C.F) certified chess teacher! Excellent Chess is looking for volunteers to help with elementary school age children. Become a volunteer if you need community service credits for college, or if you want to strengthen your teaching skills and of course if you love chess!

If you are a pro and want to pass on your skills, you can also become a coach and join the Excellent Chess team. This is a paid position! You must enjoy working with elementary school age children.
